Last night, the town of Palmyra had a guy from the Harrison County Sheriff's office come & talk about meth. Now, call me a prude, a baby, whatever, but I've never done an illegal drug. Don't know anything about 'em. Don't even know how you TAKE the crap when you're done (except for what I see in movies & we all know how reliable THAT is!)...I thought it would be interesting to go because you hear SO much about Meth in Harrison Co but I don't know the "signs" or anything like that. Plus, my dad's the "President" of the town board & that makes me the 1st daughter! I'm kidding...I'm not really the 1st daughter. I mean, technically my dad's a President & I'm his only daughter...I'm getting off topic! My dad did want me to go so I killed 2 birds w/ 1 stone. I wanted to go, plus he thinks I went for him. Win-win see? Like when I go to their house for lunch everyday & my mom makes me lunch. She gets to see me & I get to eat. Again, win-win for me!
I took a couple of pics before it started. I thought it may be tre'-rude to take pics while the dude was talking. PLUS, I was the youngest person there & I don't think the senior citizens would've appreciated my needing pics for the blog!
These are the types of items "meth cooks" use. Mostly it's stuff you can find @ Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store. I won't go into ALL the details but Meth is scary, scary stuff. You can die or be injured for life just from smelling the crap! One thing he did stress though, was NOT to pick up trash from the side of the road. They dump all their "trash" stuff out & it can seriously hurt you if you come into contact w/ it.
He also told us about how the cooks have what I would call "runners". They have different people collect all the different ingredients. Then they agree on a "drop-off" location & they leave the ingredient they collected in a plastic tote or back pack or whatever & then the cook comes & picks it up & begins the process. (How dangerous is THAT?! If kids come into contact w/ it 1st & are curious?!) He also brought a recovering meth cook to the class to talk to us. He has been clean for 5 years & he served a year in jail when he was 44 years old & that made him want to get clean. He started a program in the jail to minister to other meth addicts & they have narcotics anonymous meetings in Corydon 5 nights a week. It was truly inspring.
On a side note, here's my dad, the lifetime politician (on the right). I love how he pulls this move off. He puts his arm around ya & pulls ya in real close & tells ya...whatever. I'm sure it started w/ "Let me tell ya somethin' Gary"...or "I'm tellin' ya Gary"...
The guy on the left is Gary Gilley from the Sheriff's Dept. His job is to bust meth labs. He does these talks on his own time & doesn't receive any money. Those of you who are local may remember the meth lab bust across the street from Allen's. He talked a little about that. He said he KNEW there was a lab there. He could smell it. He just caught a break because Child Protective Services wanted to go in & they asked the Sheriff's office to go w/ them. Remember how I told ya that I didn't know how you TOOK the drug once you were done cooking it? I wanted to ask SO bad but I was a chicken. But a guy next to me asked. I didn't know if they injected it w/ a needle or made it back into a pill. He said you take it however you can. Ingest it, inject it, inhale it, insert it (EEEK!). It's VERY addictive. He said the 1st time you try it, you're hooked! That's really scary!
