When I arrived home from my jewelry show last night...I saw Brad in the yard. It was 9:30. The only time Brad's out in the yard at 9:30 is if he's walking from a tractor in the field to the house. So I said, "Uh, what's wrong?!" He says, "The hot water heater is leaking...I heard water dripping into the basement when I came home." Uh, crap.
He had towels packed around it to help soak up the water.
He also had a hose running outside down the deck to drain the hot water out.
I dunno if I've ever told you this, but when he wants to be, Brad can be EXTREMELY handy. He can fix anything- (except my satellite receiver. Our receiver went out for the 3rd time in like a year so I've been yelling & screaming at Dish Network. TV is my lifeline to the world & when I don't have it OR my DVR's, the mood in our house is.not.good.) So in his pursuit to get his cranky wifey hot water (I mean, really? How much more can a girl take? No satellite tv? No DVR? No hot water?! This is almost as bad as when the electric was out for 7 days...-that was pre-bloggin' days, y'all would've LOVED the stories I would have told about THAT!) he took out the heating element in the hot water heater. And it was naaas-tay.

It had like chunks of rust & calcium all over it. Plus, those big nasty chunks were coming out of the heater itself.
The plan for now is to clean out the nastiness from the heater & get a new element. Then we're probably going to get a tankless water heater. Instead of constantly running & keeping the 50 gallon tank hot, it only heats water when you turn the hot water on. Don't ask me how it works, people - I have no clue. I just know that it's suppose to be more energy efficient (which means my electric bill may be cheaper :) AND the Federal Government is gonna give us money back if we buy one. -You know, Global Warming & all? We gotta conserve resources, hello?
