Cruisin' day 5 - St Thomas, curly hair, iguanas, real life pirates & having the bejeezus scared outta me

On Tuesday, we stopped at St Thomas. St Thomas is owned by the United States. They're main language is English & they use the US dollar as their currency. Perfect...we were practically on home turf. Please note the houses & buildings built into that mountain. Notice how tall that mountain is? More on that later... From our balcony...
We did another tour on this island. It was a 2 hour tour of the island, 2 hours at Magen's Bay & 2 hours at Blackbeards Castle. Argh, matey!

This is us on one of the lookout stops on the tour.
Our ship is the one on the right.
This is from the 2nd lookout on our tour - Magen's Bay. It used to be listed as one of the top 10 beaches by National Geographic.
It was super humid in St Thomas. One of the locals told us it never gets below 100 degrees in the summer. My poor hair...
There were huge iguanas laying in the trees below our look out points. Eeek!
Next up was a 2 hour stop at Magen's Bay.
Myself, Carrie & Donna. My poor, poor hair...
They have these little skinny chicks walking down the beach & even through the water to serve you drinks.
Wow. Check.out.the.hair.
I hate the water. B-rad loves it. He should've been born a mermaid.
He plays with the sand....
It takes incredible concentration...
Next stop was the real life castle of Blackbeard. No cheesy, boring museum here. This was the real deal.
They had bronze statues of real life pirates. This is Blackbeard. He was one bad dude.
You were able to climb up the tower. There could only be 8 people at the top at a time. The stairs were really steep & really small.
There was another one of those damn huge iguanas on top of Blackbeards Castle! Sheesh!
Who knew Jack Sparrow was a real life pirate? I didn't! I was super excited to get our pic taken with this statue. My hair has no chance... (Notice our ship right behind me?)
Another excursion we decided to do was go to Paradise Point. It's on top of that big mountain from the first picture. We didn't get there until after dark. Everyone was like, "Oh cool, we'll get to see St Thomas at night." Greaaaaat....
And this is the contraption that was taking us to the top. There were signs that said, "Do not shake car during ride" Gulp.
I was really, really scared the whole way up. I never thought I was scared of heights, but I guess I am. Or maybe I'm just scared of some contraption hauling me up onto a mountain using only cables attached to the top so we're dangling 9000' feet about the ground. Who knows?
These 2 morons enjoyed looking out of the car while I hid my face behind my hand & said, "I DON'T LIKE IT!" for the whole 10 minutes it took us to get to the top...
But geez, look at that view at the top. View schmuew. Who freakin' cares?
I told ya'll - I was scared.
And B-rad made me try another one. I'm TRYING to smile...
3rd time was a charm. Fake it till ya make it I always say...
Finally! Thank you, dear God! Gulp...now I have to ride it back down...
Time for shopping! I found this keychain in one of the stores. I didn't buy it. I know, I know... but the only reason it was spelled the 'right' way was for the Spanish spelling. Hmph...
View of the ship while we were walking back to it.
When we walked into the room, there was no towel animal on the bed. Darn... Then we found him on the lamp! It was a pug dog!
Let me insert here that normally I feel safe on the islands. (Except for that damn Paradise Point that tried to kill me.) The locals know the cruise ships' schedules & they know that their lively hood thrives on the tourists so I never feel 'un-safe'. One thing that's kinda weird is that when you go to leave the island to get back on the ship, there are gates. With guards. And you have to show a picture i.d. plus your card for your ship. I'm assuming that's so their people don't try to get near the ships. They can't get ON the ship without a key card. When you get off the ship, you have to insert your card to show you're off the ship. When you come back on in the ports-there are the ships security guards there checking that when you insert your key card, it's your face that pops up on the screen. (When you initially board the ship, the immediately take your picture.) Then you have to go through metal detectors & your stuff has to be x-rayed just like in the airport.
Now-if Jack Sparrow got hold of your stuff...all bets are off...it's every man for himself...

I second Alicia...why wouldn't you buy that key chain?!?! This one has been my favorite so far. All the hair references made me laugh, and I too would be scared silly going up that thing!!!!

It looks like your trip was super fun! We went on a similar cruise pre-kids. It was fabulous. I loved St. Thomas! It was so beautiful. We didn't do a lot of sight seeing while we were there. The cruise directors advised us to do our shopping in St. Thomas, so we did. I got a diamond tennis bracelet as my souvenir! Cha-Ching!
